PlantEdit and ToolGen announce the agreement for collaboration for developing genome edited plant products

PlantEdit, an agricultural company developing genome edited plants, and ToolGen Inc., a biotechnology company specializing in genome editing, announced today that the companies have reached a collaboration agreement for developing genome edited plant products. Based on the MOU, two companies cooperate for mutual benefit on research and development of new technologies for generating genome edited crops and commercialize the agricultural products based on the technology.
PlantEdit, an agri-biotech startup company funded by RebelBio/SOSV program, addresses the current global agricultural issues in a sustainable, eco-friendly and consumer oriented manner using cutting edge genome editing tools along with innovative transformation technology to make sustainable foods available for the future.
“Genome editing will be the most essential tool for the future agriculture business.” said C.N. KANCHISWAMY, chief executive officer of PlantEdit, “with this platform, we aim to produce plant products that beneficial for human health, environment and farmers.”
ToolGen is an early pioneer in genome editing research. ToolGen have developed genome editing platforms such as zinc finger nuclease and TALEN and one of the IP holder company of CRISPR/Cas9 technology.

Genome editing including recent CRISPR/Cas9 technology enables free and efficient editing of genetic information in various species. This technology is very precise and significantly reduce time and cost for developing new breed of crop compared to traditional breeding or mutation breeding mediated by radiation of chemical. Particularly, PlantEdit is known to have developed DNA-free genome editing technology. This technology leaves no trace of foreign genetic elements, thus, the products get benefit in terms of safety and regulation issues.
Additional terms of the MOUs were not disclosed.
